Math
The 8th grade Algebra class will be moving into their study of inequalities involving one- and two-step operations, absolute value, and graphing the solution sets with multiple types of graphs.  In Science, they are continuing their investigation into the look of the atom and how technology has led to its evolution over the past 200o years.  They will understand how the subatomic particles interact with each other and determine what happens within a chemical reaction.

8th RELIGION
The students will deepen their understanding and appreciation of the Church as they study the Four Marks of the Church – one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.  They will explore the meaning of unity, holiness through the sacramental life, the universality of the Church in her embracing of all cultures, and the responsibilities of Church leaders in their apostolic heritage.
In this month of the Holy Rosary, the students will move on to discover the characteristics of faithful discipleship in Mary as the first true disciple of Jesus.  Her faith and response to God will be central to our study of how she fit into God’s saving plan for the world

Social Studies
In the 35 years following the ratification of the Constitution, political parties threatened to split the nation, the American territory expanded to the Pacific Ocean, and European affairs pulled the nation into war.  This month students will be completing a Constitution brochure and will be learning how meeting these challenges in domestic and foreign affairs, the country proved itself to be a strong, independent nation.  As the nation expands, students will begin to uncover the changes of our nation from an agrarian way of life to one that stressed individualism and a market economy.

Literature and English
The class of 2009 will begin working on verbs in English class.  The goal is to quickly move through the basic grammatical usage and identification of verbs in order to spend more time focusing on the various tenses and proper usage in writing.  After completing an essay during the first week of January, the class will take a break from their five paragraph essays.  First, the class will produce a slave narrative using the first – person narrative style and the information learned in Literature class through a story on Harriet Tubman and lectures.  Students will also create a “to be continued” piece using one of the works from the Literature book.  Small groups continue to work on the Chronicles of Narnia presentations focusing on the literary elements found in each novel.  In class the students will be analyzing various literary works based on the themes “Meeting Challenges”, “Blazing Trails”, and “Facing Hard Questions”. Selections include works from Jack London, Langston Hughes and Emily Dickinson.
