The first trimester is winding down, and the fifth graders are in full force!  They are growing and learning as a class each and every day.  They are also staying very busy with school work, sports and extra curricular activities.

Reading:
Students completed The Sign of the Beaver in October.  They are now reading individual books and writing book reports about each book.  They are focusing on character, setting and plot in their reports.  Along with the report, each student must present the book in a special method such as dressing as a character, creating a diorama, and writing a diary from one of the characters points of view.   I am excited to see finished products!

Religion
The 5th graders will continue to learn the truths and teachings of the Catholic religion.  They will recite traditional prayers as well as their own personal prayers.  They will continue to explore the mystery of the Trinity, learn the importance of actively participating in the Church community, strengthen their understanding of the Sacraments and become more familiar with the Church calendar.  They will also listen to Jesus’s stories and parables and relate and apply them to their own lives and stories.  Most, importantly, the 5th graders will learn to exercise their faith in their everyday lives.  They will come to realize that faith plays a central role in how they view themselves and how they interact with their families, friends and community.  Please check Miss Neves-Cole’s blog (http://dncsjskthru8.edublogs.org) for updates on class lectures, assignments, homework and tests and to access useful resources.  Please feel free to email Miss Neves-Cole at dncsjs@gmail.com if you have any questions, comments or concerns.
Social Studies
In social studies the fifth grade has a good foundation about the Indians first in the Americas.  Now we are moving on to learning about the first Explorers, including Columbus, Dias, and Da Gama along with many more.  They have now begun their journey into the development of the United States as we now know it.

Math
REVIEW! REVIEW! REVIEW!  This is what the class has been doing for the first trimester.  We are refreshing and fine tuning their memories abut all the concepts they have learned in math previously.  This includes adding, subtracting, multiplication with large numbers, and division with large numbers.  They will soon be ready to build on the concepts they already know and learn many new and exciting things!

English
The first trimester has focused on learning the parts of a sentence, how to correctly write a complete paragraph, nouns and presently verbs.  They have completed linking verb chains, typed paragraphs on the computers, and even made complete paragraph hamburgers.  They will complete their Verb unit soon, and then move on to adjectives and more!
