Dear Parents,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I had a great long weekend with my children. We went to the movies and had popcorn. I have decided to send a monthly newsletter to keep you updated.  This will give you a glimpse on what we are doing and what is coming up.  I hope you find the newsletter helpful!  Thanks for being such great parents.

February Curriculum:

Language Arts:
We will continue to work on the short vowels.  So far we have done short a, i, and o.  Next week we will work on Short u.  We have also come to and end to Unit 2 in reading and will test on Monday 12/8.  In Unit three we will explore short e and short u, consonant blends like gr, fl, br, etc.  To work on Reading comprehension we will be revisiting the main idea of a book, using context clues, recall and  retell, and drawing conclusions.  You can do this at home when reading out loud with your child.

Religion:
The 1st graders will continue to learn the basic truths and teachings of the Catholic religion.  They will learn certain formal prayers (e.g. the Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Grace Before and After Meals and Angel of God), get a better understanding of the Trinity, come to view themselves as members of the Church family and become familiar with the Sacraments and the Church calendar.  They will also listen to Jesus’s stories and parables and begin to relate and apply them to their own lives and stories.  Most, importantly, the 1st graders will learn to exercise their faith in their everyday lives.  They will begin to practice the principles of “WWJD” and “treating others they way that they want to be treated” when interacting with their family, friends and school community.
Since the 1st graders are just learning to read and write, the majority of their assignments will be drawings and short journal writings.  They will take a short test at the end of each textbook chapter.  Please check Miss Neves-Cole’s blog (http://dncsjskthru8.edublogs.org) for updates on assignments and tests and to access useful resources.  Please feel free to email Miss Neves-Cole at dncsjs@gmail.com if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

Math
In math we will continue working on subtraction and subtraction strategies. The strategies we will be working on will be using a number line, identifying patterns, and using related facts.  We will be done with chapter three in about a week and a half. The chapter 3 test is coming soon.  Use the homework to review for the test.  As always I will be sending a review.  Test will be either 12/19 or 12/20.

Social Studies:
We are finally done with unit 1.  In Unit 1 we discussed family, rules, the golden rule, country, and community as well as now and long ago,and why people move. We will have a Unit 1 test on Tuesday December 9.  I will be reviewing on Thursday and Friday as well as send  a review sheet on Monday.  Hopefully they learned from experience, from making butter and through their cultural doll projects.  Thanks again for a job well done!
In unit 2 we will be exploring where we live, our earth, natural resources, weather and seasons, and the difference between towns and suburbs.
