Detention Ministry

“When I Was In Prison You Visited Me …” – Matthew 25 v 36

Mission Statement

Detention Ministry is dedicated to the welfare of the incarcerated members of our society, especially the juveniles. Members of the ministry show concern for the spiritual, physical and social well being of the incarcerated. St. Jerome’s parish branch of the ministry is currently focused solely on the juveniles.

Which Facilities Do We Visit?

For now we visit juveniles at the Central Juvenile Hall (CJH) in Los Angeles; and the Dorothy Kirby Center in the City of Commerce.

Why Visit Them?

  • Some never get any other visitors.
  • Some long to see someone to talk to.
  • They get very bored locked up.
  • To talk about salvation and God’s willingness to forgive and restore us.
  • To encourage and exhort them to plan for a better life after their release.
  • To help prepare them for the Sacraments.

When We Visit What Do We Do?

  • Listen to them.
  • Chat with them.
  • Talk about salvation.
  • Prepare some for the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion, and/or Confirmation.
  • Suggest ways of making a change for the better when they leave.
  • Pray with them.

When Do We Visit Them?

On Sundays from 8:45 – 11:00 am; and /or Wednesdays, in the evening. The visit starts with a holy mass and ends with members visiting the inmates in groups. We can also visit on Wednesday evenings.
