Old Business

Reviewed notes from September 12th meeting:

Meeting minutes reviewed and approved.

YAM Bible Study with Holy Name:

Ike emailed his contact and did not receive a response.  He will follow up with Fr. Joe and pursue our interest in having a joint bible study event.  In the interim, Alan will confirm start date for St. Jerome’s bible study as well as the topic for the upcoming sessions.  He will email the information out to the group.  Once this is confirmed, Hava will send out a “This just out…” email to young adults on our distribution list.  The goal is to increase young adult awareness and participation in scripture study.

Detention Ministry:

Kia presented a recap of the information that Sherry outlined.  The team had questions, but agreed that this is something that we should consider doing.  It speaks to the “building community and inspiring leadership” in our mission statement.  Kia will send an email of the questions posed to Sherry and ask her to follow up with Murglen.

Wine Tasting Event:

Event will take place on October 8th from 4:00 pm -6:30 pm.  Rebecca reported a total of 18-24 have responded and will possibly attend.  Group agreed on munchies (crackers and cheese) and a main course (Compari’s Pizza).    Munchies will be provided by Alan (crackers) and Terry (mild cheeses).  Ike/Rebecca will place the order for the pizza.  In addition to this, Denise stated she would provide additional tables if needed; Terry can provide extra chairs.  Sherry has purchased a bottle of 07 Franciscan.  The other bottles will be donated by Denise, Terry, and Rebecca.  Alan already has the following:  2010 Honing Sauv. Blanc, 2009 Wild Horse Pinot Noir, 2010 Malbec.  Ike and Hava will provide the 2009 Kendall Jax Chard.  It was suggested that a Reisling be added to the menu of beverages. Alan will also provide white table cloths. Truffles will be purchased if additional funds permit.

Cookie Decoration:

Terry stated that Adrienne Toth likes the idea of the October 30th event.  It is estimated that we need about 16 people to assist with the event (2 per class and there are 8 classes).  Hava will coordinate with Sherry on the baking of the cookies.  It was discussed that the kitchen in the Parish Hall could be used for baking.  Hava also volunteered to purchase the cookies, icing, and cookie decorations for the event.  Terry will reach out to Adrienne and confirm number of children in Religious Education.  In order to get additional support for the event, Hava will contact Tiffany to see if the Youth Ministry could partner with us on the event.

A great idea presented was to have a donation jar present at the wine tasting event.  This would assist in gathering funds for October 30th.

November Service Event:

Partnership with Good Shepherd (GS) in “Heal the Bay, Nothing But Sand” in Venice on November 19th was suggested.  Hava will follow up with Jen to confirm if GS would be interested.

Terry mentioned Advent at St. Jerome’s on November 18th.  Maybe the group could show up and have and outing afterwards.

Rebecca mentioned the Thanksgiving Boutique at St. Monica’s.  They could use donations of clothes and toiletries.  Maybe we could help out with this.

December Event:

Sing-a-long at St. Jerome’s was suggested.  “Cookies, Cocoa, and Carols” should be added to our calendar.  The idea presented was we show up prior to the start of the carols and help decorate.  We would bring Christmas Cheer (rum cake, cookies, bourbon balls, alcohol, apple cider, etc.) and jumpstart the evening.

Last Meeting:  Monday, May 9, 2011

Attendees:  Terry Dicks, Hava Bourne, Alan Bernstein, Ike Okoro, Kia Lazarre, Denise McLeod, Rebecca Mendoza, Sherry Wickware

Reviewed notes from previous meeting:

Meeting notes approved.

Review of "Cup of Joe with Fr. Joe":

The event was reviewed in detail in the April 11th meeting.  A few action plans remain.  Kia will select the thank you gift for Fr. Joe and arrange for delivery.  Hava will send out an email thanking those who attended the event and inviting them to the next event.

YAM Logo:

Now that the logo is finalized, the group discussed ways to display it.  The intent is keep the logo in view of all parishioners so that they can familiarize themselves with our ministry.  Denise requested to have a copy of the final logo re-sent to all YAM Core members.  She will use the logo to make bookmarks for our May 15th mass in which Fr. Joe will ask the young adults attending the 5:30 mass to stand .  The bookmarks will be distributed to the young adults at this time.  Bookmarks will be left by Denise in the Sacristy.  Ike will follow-up with Fr. Joe so that he is aware of the announcement.  Alan volunteered to make a YAM poster that includes a slot to post upcoming events.  The poster will be displayed in the vestibule.

New Business:

Young Adult Mass, Mixer, and Forum?:

In the past, Br. Chris was looking into putting this together.  He was given approval by Fr. Norm to pursue forming a Young Adult Mass.  We will need to confirm Br. Chris' status to see if he will be available in the future to collaborate with YAM on this.  Young adults attending the Wine Bar event on Sunday will be asked if they are interested in helping with planning the Young Adult Mass.  It is important to note in the planning process that we (YAM) have developed a favorable reputation within the parish.  To ensure the success of this process, we will need to be persistent and committed.  This mass will require us to train and take on the mass and do everything but the Homily.  It was also  suggested that we hold a Young Adult Forum in late August / September.  This will give us an opportunity to see what the wants and needs of our young adults are.  Planning of this will be discussed in our future meetings.

Recap of Summer Events:

Sara the Wine Bar:

We are set for the event.  Terry suggested that we send out directions to the wine bar and instructions on additional parking (at Denny's) via email.  We will also have forms for those attending to fill out.  The forms will allow attendees to suggest ideas about future events.

Dodger Game:

July 10th 1:10pm game selected.  Seating will be in the all you can eat pavilion.  Tickets will sell for $32 each.  We anticipate that 60 tickets may be sold.  Ike will confirm that there are no implications for ticket returns.  Tickets will be sold at all masses on June 5th and 12th.  Terry will email a sign-up sheet to solicit volunteers to sell at each mass.  Information regarding sells will be presented at the June 13th YAM Meeting. Details regarding ticket pick-up will also be discussed in this meeting (the suggestion was at the conclusion of 9am mass on July 10th).  Final payment for tickets will be due two weeks before the event (June 26th).   Sherry will produce a general flyer and one for the school.  Ike will create sign-up sheets/receipts for those who purchase tickets.

Service Event:

LA Works Day was an event suggested.  It is an annual event where groups can volunteer for activities (details on website laworks.com).  Rebecca / Sherry will send out more information on this.  Possibly an event for June?  If this is not something we can do, then we can pursue Habitat for Humanity.

Facebook:

We discussed the use of social media to help spread the word about St. Jerome YAM.  Ike agreed to create a Facebook page so it can be used to advertise our Dodger Game Fundraising Event.

YAMOLA Meeting:

Hava will send an email out on the location of may 24th meeting. No attendees at the last meeting.  Hava will also reach out to Elizabeth to see if she would be interested in being a representative at the meetings.

Reviewed notes from previous meeting (March 14):

Meeting notes approved.

Mission Statement:

After the prayer, the meeting opened with the reading of our mission statement.  Members felt we should include the reading of our mission statement in each meeting.  As a result, our mission statement will be added in the meeting notes (at the top) and on each meeting agenda.

Review of “Cup of joe with Father Joe”:

About 22 names were added to our mailing list .  These are people who want to be notified of upcoming YAM events.  This brings our total mailing list to about 40.  The location of the event was nice, very inviting.  Fr. Joe did a great job in inviting others and calling on others to participate in the event.  Sherry did a great job by standing at the doorway of the gate and greeting attendees as they entered.  Sherry will add names and email addresses of those who attended the event onto the YAM distribution list.  Hava will send a thank you email out to those who attended.

 Logo Contest:

Kia informed the group that an email was sent out to all who submitted a design .  A special thank you and prize went out to the contest winner, Nicole Santa.  The group suggested that an announcement of the winner should be published in the bulletin.  A thank you for YAM member Jason Murray should be included.  Jason created the graphic representation of Nicole’s design.

Also, an email with the logo should be sent to Hortense, so that she may include it with our mission statement on the parish website. (Kia agreed to email Hortense).

The group agreed that we should include the logo on the following items: Bookmarks, tents (to place on tables at events), and information cards.

Denise agreed to work on the bookmarks.  The bookmarks will include our logo, mission, parish mass schedule, and YAM meeting dates (2nd Monday of each month), and email address.

New Business:

April 9th Retreat:

The event was discussed and feedback was given from those who attended.  The general consensus was that the number of attendees was great and the guest speaker did a wonderful job.  It was recommended that in future events of this nature, ground rules are set to encourage an environment where all questions/ideas will be embraced and welcomed.  The latter was suggested due to a member feeling that his question was not answered.

One of the questions posed to the group was what “takeaway” from the retreat can YAM implement and own?  We agreed that cross ministering (partnering with other ministries) in activities is something we feel strongly about.  One idea was getting together with parish youth and creating a young adult mass.  This collaboration would require the assistance of Br. Chris.  The best time would be when confirmation starts in the fall.  We could use this as a time to have a kick off.  After mass, we could have a youth/young adult mixer.  We could also have young adult retreats in the future.

Rebecca mentioned that there are a lot of churches close to us that have a youth mass; Saint Monica and Saint Augustine to name a couple.  She also mentioned that Della (Pastoral Associate at St.Monica) would be a good resource for us and we should leverage her expertise.

There was a small discussion on what we can do to get our young adults to participate as Liturgical Ministers.  Maybe May 5th planning meeting, invite some young adults.  Young adult training, youth/young adult mass (September), meeting forum for young adults to discuss ideas on how to make the parish more inviting were also recommended.

Summer Events/Activities:

A young adult retreat (a suggestion from the confirmation group).  This could be an overnight or a dayside only event.  Sherry stated that the Day Retreat with YAMOLA was very good.  Rebecca stated that St. Monica’s had a young adult retreat that we could use as a template.  They have both an urban and overnight retreat.

A Dodger Game fundraising event: Ike suggested possible dates.  The event will be all you can eat.  Maybe make it a family event.  Ike recommends 1pm on a Sunday in late June.  Ike will email out dates and make a decision.  In May meeting, pass out details.  Hava to get with Br. Chris to make a poster, Jason could assist.  One issue was raised about the recent event in which the Giant’s fan was attacked at Dodger Stadium.  The group stated that they felt comfortable having an event there.

Sara The Wine Bar: Group decided this as our May event.  The date will be May 15th.  Invite young adults to attend the Sunday 5:30 pm mass, we can all sit together at a designated area at mass.  The festivities will soon follow at 7 pm at the wine bar.  Ike will send an email to Terry once arrangements are made so that she can get the info to Roxanne for the bulletin.

Service Event:

Suggestion was Habitat for Humanity.  Discussion followed about the ministry not being active. Do we as YAM need to organize this?  Maybe we can partner with Just Faith.  Although Habitat for Humanity is not constructing houses, we may be able to help build frames at a warehouse in Carson during the summer (early to mid July). Sherry will follow up with Deacon Guy.  Rebecca agreed to assist with the planning of a service event.

Terry mentioned she is meeting with St. Vincent DePaul on Thursday.  She will see if they have some activities that we can participate in.

The Detention Ministry was mentioned, but there was concern if this was too heavy for young adults.

YAMOLA Meeting:

Next meeting Tuesday, April 26th (location unknown)

Open Discussion/Announcements:

Jason announced the closing rally for “Right for Life” event being held on April 16th from      7pm-9pm (handouts containing detailed information were distributed).

Sherry announced Alicia Lambert is interested in joining YAM core team.

Put marketing for YAM as a topic on our agenda for the May meeting.

Rebecca mentioned that a personal call goes a long way in thanking people for attending our events.  It is also a great way to follow up with those who express interest in YAM and for extending invitations to participate in future events.  She volunteered for the role of Hospitality & Welcome.

New Business:

Future YAM Event:

The group discussed types of events that YAM could host (i.e. Social, Fundraising, Charity, Service).  Some suggestions were LAX Food Pantry, nursing home visit, Sara The Wine Bar, coffee and donuts, an event on Palm Sunday, going to eat together after mass (M & M’s Soul Food), and attending a Dodger game

It was decided that the goal of our next event should be to increase membership.

The group agreed that coffee and donuts following the 11 am mass (and blessing) from Fr. Joe would be a great event.  The event “Cup of Joe with Fr. Joe” would be held on April 3rd.

Kia volunteered to get coffee for the event.  Ike / Hava to get donuts, ask Br. Chris to assist with the flyer design, and coordinate having the flyers stuffed into the bulletin.  Alan volunteered to get orange juice.  Terry will bring paper and plastics, advertise the event in the bulletin, get a table to place the refreshments on, ask Fr.

The logo designs were reviewed and voted upon.  The logo designed by Nicole Santa was selected.  The team requested that the following modifications to the chosen design: cleaner lines, teal and yellow coloring added, and script letters.  Kia will follow up with Miss Santa to request the changes and ask if she could create a graphic representation of her design.  The goal is to have the design finalized before our next event.

Norm if we could use the Rectory garden, and ask Fr. Joe for his blessing during mass and availability following mass.  Jason will see if he can get additional tables.
