Understand place value of whole numbers and decimals to two decimal places, and understand how decimals relate to simple fractions; use a variety of strategies to solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers; estimate to verify the reasonableness of calculated results; explain mathematical reasoning using words, numbers, symbols, graphs, diagrams, or models; use formulas to solve problems involving perimeter and area; demonstrate an understanding of plane and solid geometric objects.

Identify the distinguishing geographical features of California’s regions; discuss the social, political, cultural, and economic influences of immigrant populations and the interaction among various groups; understand the significance of important historical events; examine the relationship between state and federal government; discuss how natural resources and increased trade have contributed to periods of rapid economic growth in California.

RELIGION

Examine and respond to Scriptural passages that speak of God’s love for us; understand and celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist more fully; learn how the Ten Commandments, Beatitudes, and Corporal/Spiritual Works of Mercy help us live more loving and happy lives; understand the Church as a community of worship, witness, and service.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Use appropriate strategies when reading for different purposes; build vocabulary and develop an understanding of figurative language; identify and make connections between elements of plot; select a focus, organizational structure, and point of view when writing multiple-paragraph essays; locate and evaluate information found in reference materials when doing research; use correct conventions in writing.
