The content covered over the duration of the year will fall into alignment with both State and Archdiocesan standards. The overall grade will be based on earned points in four areas.
Students investigate the origins and development of ancient societies of major western and non-western civilizations, including cultures in Africa, Asian, and Europe. Emphasis is placed on major contributions, achievements, and beliefs that have endured over the centuries to the present day. The focus is on people, their accomplishments, problems, social, political, economic structures, belief systems, tools and technology, art, architecture, literature, their explanation for natural events, and their direct or indirect contributions to dealing with universal social issues that face every civilization. Students will be involved in many activities to experience and understand this content, supported with appropriate reading and writing assignments to enhance their understanding.
The sixth grade edition of the Christ Our Life series takes the students through the Old Testament and makes the connection between Judaism and Christianity. Students will learn the faith and religious practices of Jesus and how He was the fulfillment of ancient prophecies. They will understand how God has been calling people to love Him since the beginning of humanity’s existence, speaking through prophets, saints and even those who walk beside them as family and friends.
Reading/Language Arts This course is designed to improve students’ skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking English. Through the reading of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, students explore ideas, attitudes and values and relate these to themselves and the larger community. They analyze and respond to the literature. Reading, writing, and spelling skills are continually assessed and each student receives appropriate instruction to improve these skills.
