Spanish (K-8) New Year, New Program, Fresh Start! Welcome to Miss Neves-Cole’s SJS webpage! I am the Spanish teacher for all grades (K-8). Learning Spanish will prove invaluable to our students. It will enable them to better communicate with the large Spanish-speaking population in Southern California. And, it will expose them to one of the most widely spoken languages in the world (21 countries claim Spanish as their official language!). The study of Spanish also offers multi-disciplinary benefits. In Spanish class, students will strengthen their general language skills. What they learn through Spanish grammar will assist them in understanding and correctly applying English grammar. Spanish classes will also touch on the geography and culture of the Spanish-speaking countries. Lastly, since Catholicism plays such an important and pervasive role in Hispanic/Latino culture, Spanish classes will reinforce the universality of the Catholic faith.

My goal is to provide a cohesive curriculum throughout the grades that will develop our students’ Spanish speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Students will learn Spanish pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar through a variety of mediums (including video, music and games!). Of course, immersion is the most successful way to learn a foreign language. Our students only have Spanish class twice each week. So, I will need our parents’ assistance to expose our students to Spanish on a more regular basis. Students will have Spanish homework. But, I also encourage parents to have their children watch TV and movies and listen to music and talk radio in Spanish at home each night. With our parents’ help, I hope to equip our students with the confidence and skills necessary to excel in high school Spanish.

5th thru 8th Grades

Our older students will review previously learned words and phrases and will learn new ones. For the most part, I expect them to learn vocabulary on their own through memorization. Every few weeks, I will give a list of vocabulary, assign them to make flashcards and to use other memorization techniques and test them on the vocabulary. Our older students must understand that non-written assignments (i.e. studying and memorizing) must be completed and must be taken just as seriously as written assignments. 5th thru 8th grade Spanish classes will begin concentrate on Spanish verbs and conjugation. Our older students will learn to conjugate both regular and irregular verbs. Once they have learned to conjugate verbs, they will combine this knowledge with the vocabulary that they have learned and begin to speak and write in complete and correct Spanish sentences. Parents, please check my blog (http://dncsjskthru8.edublogs.org) for a list of the vocabulary, prayers and grammar that your children are learning in class so that you can work with them at home.

Primary Grades

Primary Grades (K-2)

Students in the primary grades will learn basic Spanish words and phrases. Each month will be dedicated to a specific category of vocabulary. For example, in September, we may learn calendar vocabulary (e.g. the seasons, the months and the days of the week). And, in October, we may learn classroom objects. We will also begin to learn prayers in Spanish. My goal is to get these beginning students to enjoy learning Spanish and to feel comfortable speaking and listening to Spanish. Parents, please check my blog(http://dncsjskthru8.edublogs.org) for a list of the vocabulary and prayers that your children are learning in class so that you can work with them at home.

3rd and 4th Grades

Our 3rd and 4th graders will continue to learn Spanish vocabulary and prayers in Spanish. However, their study will focus around the Spanish alphabet and phonics. We will spend a large amount of time on Spanish phonics so that the students learn proper pronunciation and spelling. Later in the year, the 3rd and 4th graders will study basic Spanish grammar (e.g. the 4 ways to say “the” and “a/an,” feminine and masculine words, noun-adjective agreement). Parents, please check my blog (http://dncsjskthru8.edublogs.org) for a list of the vocabulary, prayers and grammar that your children are learning in class so that you can work with them at home.
