Religion Program

St Jerome School is a Catholic school located within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. A daily religion class is taught at all grade levels and second grade students receive sacramental preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Three important practices -- prayer, Mass and service -- are intergral to SJS students learning to live their faith.

Prayer:

Daily prayer is an important part of classroom life at St Jerome. Both formal, memorized prayers and spontaneous prayer are taught and shared both in each classroom and with the whole school community. Students learn about the Liturgical year and appropriate prayers and music for each season.

Mass:

Religious worship is central to the Catholic identity of St Jerome School. Children in grades 1-8 attend 8:00 AM Mass each Friday. Student should arrive at school at 7:45 on Fridays. Classes learn about the Liturgy by preparing the readings, prayers and music.  The SJS student body also attends Mass on specific Holy days throughout the year. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend any or all of these Masses with their children.

Saturday/ Sunday Mass is recognized as the prime opportunity for parent-guided religious formation. Weekly Sunday Mass participation provides an opportunity for community building in a Christ centered environment. It is essential to the mission of the school, in partnership with parents for the Catholic education of their children that families attend Mass on a weekly basis to provide example and assistance for their children in developing respectful habits of active participation during Mass.

Service:

Throughout the school year students have the opportunity to practice giving service to others. From disaster relief drives to collections for the Holy Childhood Society to working at various service opportunities in the school and parish, SJS students learn about giving of their time and talent. Students in grades six through eight participate in a more formalized program. They are obligated to complete an appropriate number of service hours for each grade level. These hours may be completed either on or off campus.
