Detention

To emphasize the importance of making positive contributions to their community, students who break school/classroom rules will be assigned to detention, at the discretion of the supervising staff member.  Classroom teachers explain their age-appropriate policies regarding detention at the beginning of the school year.
Detention is held during the lunch hour on Wednesday for Grades K-4 and Thursdays for Grades 5-8. Students who are assigned to detention are issued detention notices that are to be returned the next day with a parent’s signature.   Students may not serve detentions until these notices have been signed so that we know parents are aware of the behavior and the detention.  Students must serve their detention on the date assigned.  If they miss the detention without a valid excuse a second detention will be issued.  A medical excuse from the doctor and absence from school are valid reasons.  It is expected that school staff members will experience positive support of parents especially at times of disciplinary action and/or when children are present.  If a child continually has to serve detention a monetary fee of $10.00 will be assessed to the family.  The fee will be incurred on the third detention, and each detention thereafter.

If a student receives a third detention notice within a trimester, the student must meet with the parents, classroom teacher, and principal to discuss behavioral changes necessary for positive participation in the school community, and to schedule three weekly parent-teacher-student meetings to monitor the required improvement in behavior.  A student who receives a fifth detention notice will receive an in-school suspension or expulsion.   If the student remains s/he will not be allowed to participate in Activity Day at the end of the year.

Detention takes precedence over all extracurricular activities

Automatic Detention

Certain actions that are serious in nature may be cause for automatic detention. They include the following:
 1.  willfully defying and disrespecting teachers and/or staff
 2. using profanity or vulgar or inappropriate language
 3. fighting
 4. tampering with other people’s property
 5. chewing gum or eating sunflower seeds on school grounds on school days or during
     school sponsored activities

Referrals
Referrals are issued to students who perform minor acts against school rules, acts that need correction and a reminder of good behavior but do not warrant punishment.  An accumulation of referrals is a sign that a student may be taking rules lightly.  Upon receiving a fifth referral the student will receive a detention notice.  Parents should sign the referral and return it to school the next day.

Probation
If after continuous correction a student’s poor behavior does not improve, the student will be placed on probation.  The student, parents, teacher and principal will sign a contract stating the terms of the probation.  A single serious offense may also warrant probation.

The principal reserves the right to make decisions s/he feels are appropriate for the individual and for the school.
