HOMEWORK
HOMEWORK Time Allotments Grades K - 2: not to exceed 30 minutes Grades 3 - 5 not to exceed 1 hour Grades 6 – 8 not to exceed 2 hours
Purpose Homework is assigned to reinforce material already taught and to foster habits of independent study. Homework well done is a significant factor to student success, therefore St. Jerome School expects the completion of homework each Monday through Thursday, according to the time allotments listed above. Written homework is usually not assigned on weekends or other holidays unless make-up work or long-range assignments are required. Long-range research assignments should be carefully planned to avoid last minute panic.
Homework time should be quiet and uninterrupted. Assignments should be completed neatly, carefully, and promptly. Non-written homework--reading, review, studying for tests--should be completed as conscientiously as written homework.
The amount of time spent doing homework differs with each student’s needs and ability. Students who experience a great amount of difficulty with their school subjects may be excused from completing the assignments with a satisfactory explanation from the parents. However time spent daydreaming or playing, as well as time spent on unfinished classroom make-up work, should not be considered part of the allotted time. Students, who have been ill are responsible to obtain and complete assignments missed due to their illness. Parents who wish to request class work for students during an extended illness must call the school office before 10:00 a.m. on the day they wish to pick up the assignments. Assignments should be picked up from the office at 3:00 p.m.
All students in grades 1-8 receive homework notebooks and are instructed on their use. Students who do not have their HOMEWORK NOTEBOOK for three consecutive days will be given a new one and will be charged $1.00. Students who must sign in the office for not having their homework notebook three times in a trimester will be issued a detention. Parents should review student homework notebooks and assignments each evening and indicate that they have done so by signing the Homework Notebook. Signatures in the notebook or on student work papers indicate parent awareness, but not necessarily their approval of achievement/ situations.
Homework left at home will not be delivered to students during the school day. MISSING HOMEWORK notices will be affixed to the notebook pages when students do not have their completed homework at school, even if parents have indicated the reason. Parents should sign the MISSING HOMEWORK notices on the same day they are given. A studernt in grades 1-5 will be required to study in “Homework Room”after he/she receives five missing homework stickers on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of the following week and parents will be charged a fee of $21.00. Students in grades 6-8 will be required to study in “Homework Room” after receiving eight homework missing stickers. Students in grades 1 and 2 will be in the Homework Room from 3:25-4:00 p.m., and students in grades 3-8 will be in the Homework Room from 3:25-4:30 p.m.
Students will receive Homework Room slips to notify parents of the need to participate in the Homework Room the following week. Parents should sign the slips and return them to school the next day with payment. Students will not be permitted to serve Homework Room time without parent signatures on these slips.
Homework Room takes precedence over all extracurricular activities including team practices and/or games. Failure to serve Homework Room in the following week without a valid reason will result in additional Homework Room time and may lead to detention. A student receiving a Homework Room Slip for the fourth time will not be able to participate in Activity Day. Extended Care students who have earned Homework Room slips due to missing homework will not be released to play until all homework is completed.
